Remembering Gary

It is twelve months since we lost our good friend Gary Messenger, who will always be remembered by the Workington Reds family.

And today’s ‘Gary McKee marathon’ was dedicated to our former skipper, and others, as Cleator Moor’s fund-raising hero embarked on the eleventh leg of his ‘100 to LDN’ challenge, which culminates with the London marathon in April.

Former Reds player, Simon Parry, was running alongside Gary McKee for Tuesday’s challenge with the handful of runners leaving Cleator Moor at 1130 ahead of the twenty-six miles (plus) route.

Hospice at Home West Cumbria will again benefit from McKee’s fortitude with a £100,000 target set for his latest fundraising quest. That total will bring Cumbria Marathon Man’s tally to an incredible £1m for Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

Gary Messenger died last year at the tender age of 62. He was a friend to all and a well-respected footballer in the county having played for Barrow, Gretna and Workington, among others.

His widow Janice was at Cleator Moor to wave off the handful of runners who embarked on today’s venture.
