MATCH PREVIEW: Reds hope to avenge heavy Cup loss

Workington make a return trip to Gigg Lane on Saturday, hoping to do better than they did on their last visit.

Back in September, we crashed out of the FA Cup as Bury inflicted a 5-1 defeat upon us.  The outcome was probably no great surprise as we have never got the better of the Shakers in the Cup and rarely do we have any joy, at what many consider the best venue in the Northern Premier League.

With all previous meetings against Bury (old or new) in the Football League, the FA Cup or the Football League Cup, perhaps the inaugural NPL encounter may bring a change of fortune.

We did manage to win there once upon a time, a 3-2 League Cup success sixty years ago but, that apart, Bury have beaten us on four occasions in the Football League plus a further three times in the FA Cup.

Bury’s Cup run culminated in a televised tie v. Harrogate Town but, after holding them to a 1-1 draw before the cameras, they made their exit in the replay.

They are still in the Trophy, a winnable game at Darlington awaits, but the priority is another promotion and, once they have played their games in hand, they will certainly be in the mix.

November will prove a pivotal month for them with Avro, Cleethorpes and Redcar all to visit Gigg Lane.

Reds go into the game above them in the table although our 24 points have been obtained from three games more.  If we are still higher placed on Saturday evening, it will have been a good day!

Manager Billy Barr’s injury worries are still a concern but we are certainly seeing some light at the end of the tunnel with some of the senior players almost ready for a return to action.

It will be another demanding afternoon, Lancaster City remain the only away team to win at Bury this term, but a fixture the manager, players and supporters are looking forward to.

Kick-off: 3pm

Mileage: 136

  • There will be no ‘pay on the day’ facility for Workington fans and for those who have purchased tickets in advance, please access via turnstiles 4, 5 and 6.
