MATCH PREVIEW: Next stop – Hurst Cross

Just two away games remaining for Billy Barr’s Workington with the first of those on Saturday at mid-table Ashton United (3pm).

We would much rather be in their situation than where we are but, at least, everyone is well aware of what is required over the final fortnight of this troubled season.

Steve Cunningham’s side are on course to finish in the top half of the table and, interestingly, their recent matches have been against our relegation rivals.  They drew at Morpeth Town, won at Whitby Town, lost at Stocksbridge Park Steels, won v. Rushall Olympic and lost at Hyde United.  Their results could impact on who goes down and who stays up then, on the final day, they travel to Hednesford Town and are more than capable of spoiling The Pitmen’s party.

United are currently in 11th position with 48 points, obtained after recording thirteen victories and nine draws.  On their own patch, they have won seven games, drew four and lost seven.

Back in August, the Borough Park clash resulted in a 1-1 draw.  Steven Rigg’s twice taken penalty gave us the lead but Luca Navarro equalised in the second half.

Riggy’s goal was the 100th goal in the series but the head-to-head has Ashton ahead with fourteen wins, three more than our tally of eleven.

The point obtained on Easter Monday took our total to 40 but Matlock Town obtained 42 last season and were still relegated while Nantwich Town were demoted a few seasons ago despite reaching 46 points.

Plenty of work to do over the next few weeks but, as ever, the supporters will be behind Billy and the team.
