Colin Doorbar

It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Colin Doorbar, one of the longest serving directors in the club’s history.

Colin passed away peacefully on Monday evening with daughter, Amanda, by his side.  He was 82. 

A native of Biddulph in Staffordshire, Colin was a Port Vale supporter in his youth then, following a move to Cumbria in the late seventies, developed an interest in Workington Football Club.

He became a Board member in the early eighties and would eventually serve the club as a director, chairman and secretary throughout the eighties, nineties and the 2000s before stepping down for the final time in 2013.

Over the years he was fully committed to the cause and devoted time, energy and no shortage of financial support to WAFC and its fair to say there wouldn’t be a club today if it wasn’t for Colin, in particular, and his compatriots.

They guided the Reds through various crises during the eighties and nineties when support was at an all-time low, carrying the burden that was a stricken football club.

WAFC wasn’t the only organisation to benefit from Colin’s leadership qualities and wonderful approach to life, and he played a major part in the local Rotary Club, St. John’s Ambulance and Polish Aid (Allerdale), among others.

Accompanied by his wife, Ann, he once drove a van to Poland laden with medical supplies, epitomising his belief of putting others before himself.

Apart from football, music was a big part of his leisure time as was philately and his collection of whiskies.  He was a collector of memorabilia too – football and music featuring prominently once again.   

A kind, caring man who will be sadly missed, Colin is survived by his daughter, Amanda, son-in-law, Ali, and granddaughter, Rachel, to whom we send our condolences.
