Reds ready

Billy Barr will take Workington into their fortieth season of Northern Premier football on Saturday.  And they go into action as a Premier Division outfit having pulled off the great escape in April, avoiding relegation by the narrowest of margins.

They face another tough season which commences with a challenging opening day fixture at Gainsborough Trinity, a team expected to do well.

Reds have opened the new season at this venue before, going down to a 3-2 defeat in Lincolnshire on the first day of the ’84-85 season.  Back in February, they shared six goals with Trinity in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The team have endured mixed fortunes on the first Saturday of the season, winning on fourteen occasions, playing out a draw eleven times and suffering a loss in thirteen matches.

Having conceded six on one occasion, scoring seven in another, it is difficult to predict what will happen on the first Saturday but Reds are ready to go and will be hoping to defy the odds and make a winning start at the Kal Group Stadium.
