The Development Squad did something that the first team couldn’t manage to do – record a victory at Palmerston Park!
And five of the squad who represented the Reds in a 2-0 defeat at Dumfries last month, contributed to a more satisfying outcome in the youth friendly.
Harrison Telford headed Workington in front after twenty minutes when he arrived at the far post to connect with a Jayden Fulton free-kick.
A precise finish from the edge of the box restored parity for Queens but Reds regained the lead thanks to a powerful strike from Alfie McDonough.
Telford, Fulton and McDonough, along with Luke Routledge and Joe Douglas, all featured in last month’s encounter so it was a happy return for the quintet.
Reds were 2-1 up at the break but it could have been more. Matthew Jackson’s ‘goal’ was disallowed for offside and the home ‘keeper saved well to thwart Fulton and Oscar Pickering.
Reds did go further ahead, though, as they dominating the early stages of the second half. Ben Whitworth got on the score sheet after beating his man and finding the net and Joe Carney made it 4-1 on the hour with a clever finish from an acute angle.
Queens reduced the arrears with a rather special goal but Reds wrapped up an emphatic win by scoring the seventh of the evening when Fulton got the reward his performance deserved.
A good night’s work was tarnished by an unfortunate injury to midfielder, Liam White, who now faces a spell on the sidelines.
The next outing for the young Reds will be at Kendal Town on Sunday.
Team: Rumney, Routledge, Telford, Jackson, White C, Amor, White L, Fulton, McDonough, Pickering, Hodgson. Substitutes – Douglas, Rudd, Cueto, Thomson, Whitworth, Carney.
