Dav’s career in numbers

Reds’ supporters are still coming to terms with the announcement of David Symington’s retirement, so ending a distinguished career which saw him turn out for Carlisle United, Barrow, Whitehaven and, of course, Workington.

We look back at his time at Borough Park and the joy and pleasure delivered by one of our own:

11 – Dav represented the club over eleven seasons but it wasn’t all plain sailing. During the 2014-15 campaign, he came to us on loan from Carlisle United but lasted just 70 minutes of his Valentine’s Day debut. He sustained a knee injury and returned to the dressing room on a stretcher.

He missed the first half of the ’18-19 season through injury, made just ten starts and didn’t score at all when he returned to action.

During the second Covid interrupted season, 20-21, Dav made just 5 starts and netted just the one goal.

Last season was another frustrating stint with injury restricting him to just 16 starts.

In contrast, his best season, in terms of appearances, was the ’17-18 campaign when he started 57 of the 64 league and cup matches we played.

7 – Will always be associated with the number 7 shirt during his time as a Workington player but it wasn’t always that way. He made his debut in the number 2 shirt then, after becoming a Workington player, wore number 3 (or number 10) in his early appearances.

Significantly, perhaps, he was wearing the iconic number 7 when he scored his first goal for the club, the first time he was sent off as a Reds’ player and the first time he missed a penalty in Workington colours.

296 – Starts in competitive matches plus a further 54 appearances on the bench.

113 – Netted over a century of competitive goals for the club with 96 (Northern Premier League), 2 (NPL play-offs), 4 (FA Cup), 4 (FA Trophy) and 7 (Cumberland Cup).

47 – Also started forty-seven non-competitive games (friendlies) plus a further nine appearances on the bench.

21 – The number of goals he scored in non-competitive matches.

59 – The number of different teams he has scored against.

68 – He skippered the side on sixty-eight occasions plus a further eleven times in friendlies.

3 – Finished outright top scorer on three occasions with totals of 15 (2016-17), 20 (2022-23) and 26 (2023-24) and was leading league scorer with 14 (2021-22).

His golden spell, in terms of goals involvement, was the three seasons between 2021 and 2024 when he scored 60 goals and assisted 28 in 111 league and cup outings.

18 – Dav has scored direct from free-kicks on eighteen occasions – 14 of which in competitive matches and the other 4 in pre-season outings.

15 – His penalty-kick record is less impressive in competition games with 9 converted and 6 either missed or saved.

2 – The two red cards in his career were recorded at Spennymoor Town (’16-17) and in the home match v. Gainsborough Trinity (’25-26).

Thanks for the memories Dav.
