BOROUGH PARK MEMORIES: A special week for Kit

There is no better feeling than watching your team record a rare, high-scoring victory.  It gives you that feeling of invincibility for an hour or so after the game and, momentarily, you are on top of the world.

Imagine being a Reds fans in a particular week in October, 1965 when our sixties heroes inflicted a 7-0 defeat upon Swansea Town on the Monday evening and backed it up with a 6-1 success against Exeter City on the Saturday!

Thirteen goals in successive home games is a positive return in anyone’s language but it was a rather special week for our number 9, Kit Napier.

He scored four goals against the Swans then bagged three more in the Exeter encounter, at a time when Workington were enjoying life in the Third Division of the Football League.

Kit, or Christopher, Robin, Anthony to give him his full title, was joined on the score sheet by Jimmy Moran (2) and Dixie Hale in the Swansea match with the latter a former Vetch Field player.

Napier, thanks to a couple of penalties, completed a good week’s work with a threesome against Exeter with Ken Oliver, Barry Lowes and Hale, again, also amongst the goals.

It was a rather memorable week, but there was a downside.  Napier’s goalscoring exploits were being noted higher up the football food chain and, a few weeks later, he had been transferred to Newcastle United for the best part of £20k!

It was good while it lasted and Kit became the hero of most Reds fans at that time.  It is six years since his passing in South Africa where he finished his playing days.
