Heated debate at AGM

There were some angry exchanges at the annual shareholders’ AGM as supporters engaged with directors on club matters in an open forum.

The heated debate followed the general business of the meeting, and there were hints of criticism from the floor towards the directors and even a suggestion that the chairman, John Mackay, should stand down to make way for ‘new blood’.

The Chairman had presented the club’s accounts to the audience and, taking into consideration the difficulties that go with a Workington AFC balance sheet, explained how the deficit had been considerably reduced in recent years.

He also paid tribute to manager Danny Grainger, his staff and the players, for the positive response to last season’s relegation.

Finances, the current ground and the revised new stadium project were other topics given an airing.

Directors David Cumberworth and Mike Rollo had to stand for re-election by rotation, with the former re-elected unanimously whilst the latter stood down as a Board member.

Les Byers, who has been working closely with the Board for nearly two years, was elected as a new director.

The meeting lasted for almost three hours.
