New club, old ground

Reds will return to league action on Saturday when they face the youngest club in the BetVictor Northern Premier League, Ossett United. And, although the majority of the current squad haven’t played at Ingfield, the Workington supporters will be familiar with the stadium having met Ossett Town several times there over the years.

United have experienced a difficult start to the season and are currently third from bottom in BetVictor North West. But fortunes appear to have changed for the better following a switch of manager with former Carlisle United player, Andy Welsh, stepping down and succeeded by Wayne Benn.

Benn enjoyed quite a bit of success against Workington during his playing days for Bradford Park Avenue and will be confident of maintaining United’s bright start under his tenure.

His side is packed with some star-studded names for this level, many of whom have opposed Reds in the past.

Danny Grainger will welcome experienced duo Gari Rowntree and Brad Carroll back to the squad after long term absences. Both proved their fitness in the reserve team match on Wednesday.

The manager will also hope to introduce loan signing Taylor Charters to Northern Premier League football, with the youngster keen to taste the action after his debut was thwarted by the weather last week.

Reds are hanging on to top spot by their finger tips but Trafford, Marine, Clitheroe and Ramsbottom United are all poised to take over should we falter.
