Hyde United (post script)

We first crossed swords with Hyde United the best part of seventy years ago – an FA Cup tie at Borough Park in the fifties – and, since then, have become regular opponents throughout the 2000s.

That followed a dozen meetings in the eighties when we battled against each other in what was then a one division Northern Premier League.

Our record in NPL combat isn’t too clever and Saturday’s narrow defeat at Borough Park was Hyde’s twelfth win in a series now stretching to twenty matches.  Workington have won just four times during that time.

Reds’ record against The Tigers was considerably better during the Conference North era with six wins recorded and only two defeats inflicted upon us from fourteen games played.

In FA competitions the honours are even.  We won the only FA Cup encounter back in 1954 but Hyde emerged victors when we met in the Trophy earlier this season.

The teams have now faced up 36 times with Reds winning 11 times, 10 games resulting in a draw and Hyde coming out on top on 15 occasions.

Lewis Alessandra’s match winner just before half time at the weekend was the 113th goal in the series.
