Impressive debut from Niall

Workington’s new recruit hit the ground running on Saturday, producing a very impressive performance on his debut.

Niall Brookwell, 21, was announced as a new signing prior the Basford United game kicking off at Borough Park but, such was the length of the unavailable list, the Wigan based defender/midfielder was pressed into action straightaway.

In what can only be described as a coup for the club, Niall looked a class act for the sixty-six minutes he was on the pitch – and that was without any match action for some time and very little training with his new colleagues.

And what a pedigree he brings to the club having spent time in the Liverpool Academy and two years with Newcastle United. Ironically, he has also been associated with Darlington, spending the second half of last season with next week’s Cup opponents on loan.

The player was happy enough with his first contribution in a Workington shirt whilst manager, Danny Grainger, said Niall’s arrival had lifted some of the injury gloom hampering progress at the moment.

Reds went into the Basford fixture with eight players unavailable and Lewis Reilly was added to the list just fifteen minutes in when he sustained a suspected broken ankle.
