Another bombshell for Reds

Still reeling after the Jamie Devitt news earlier this week, Danny Grainger has been dealt another blow with Niall Brookwell accepting an offer to cross the water and try his luck with League of Ireland club, Cork City.

The twenty-one-year-old joined Reds in September and has been a consistent performer in his 22 appearances, operating mainly in defence and occasionally in midfield.

He arrived at Borough Park with a good pedigree having spent time with the Liverpool Academy and then playing for Newcastle United’s PL2 team.  He also had a spell on loan at Darlington last season.

Niall played his first few games in midfield but the majority of appearances have been at the heart of the defence alongside a variety of partners – Dan Wordsworth, Gabriel Rios-Newton, Josh O’Brien, Camron Gbadebo, Sam Smith and Jordan Little to name a few.

He has trained with his new team mates ahead of the League of Ireland season which starts next week.  Cork begin their campaign with a home match v. Kerry next Friday.

Niall will become the second Workington player to be employed by the west of Ireland club, following in the footsteps of Derek Mountfield who had a brief spell as manager there twenty years ago.

“We are obviously disappointed to lose Niall at this stage of the season but won’t stand in his way and wish him the best of fortune with this exciting opportunity,” said a club spokesman.
