Recap

Both clubs are in the process of a major team rebuilding exercise so a draw from this entertaining contest was probably a satisfactory outcome.

But the fact that Workington were slightly disappointed with the result suggests they are marginally ahead of Morecambe in terms of their preparation.

There will always be concern amongst supporters when so many players need to be recruited but a feeling of optimism is beginning to emerge at Borough Park with the number of senior bodies increasing steadily.

And a deserved draw against EFL opposition for the second successive week sent the Workington faithful home content.

Indeed, when Josh Galloway netted a superb first goal at Borough Park, Workington were just eleven minutes away from a pleasing victory.  But that inner glow of being ahead was diminished just three minutes later when Jamie Stott headed an equaliser.

Morecambe did have the lion’s share of possession in the early stages but Reds, like in the game against Carlisle, worked hard without the ball but were more industrious with it.

The Shrimps will reflect on far post chances for Paul Lewis, first half, and Jordan Slew in the second when a better connection would have certainly resulted in a goal whilst a Max Taylor header, in between, was comfortably held by Alex Mitchell.

Reds’ best moments saw a Galloway effort drift wide but Harry Burgoyne saving well to thwart Steven Rigg when the latter found himself in a bit of space.  Rigg, after good approach play with Kai Nugent, saw another attempt clear the bar.

Mitchell was forced into a spectacular save in the second half, diving to his left to push away Adam Lewis’ well struck shot.

The opening goal for the home side came in the seventy-ninth minute and followed a David Symington free kick on the right.  Morecambe dealt with the original teasing cross but the ball fell, conveniently to the well positioned Galloway just outside the area.  His intentions were clear and he promptly struck the ball powerfully and accurately beyond Stuart Moore for his third goal of the summer.

The joy, and sense of anticipation, was short-lived with Morecambe responding well.  Charlie Brown floated a corner into the area and Stott, unchallenged, firmly headed the leveller.

If that late equaliser didn’t dampen the spirits of the home fans, then a torrential summer downpour at the end of the game certainly did!
