Recap

We have been crying out for a clean sheet for weeks so rather ironic that Reds record one the very day the goals dry-up at the other end!

It was just the second goalless draw they have been involved in but the tenth overall, a statistic keeping them entrenched in the lower half of the Premier Division table.

Both goalkeepers – Reds’ Jim Atkinson and Whitby’s Shane Bland – were man-of-the-match contenders, suggesting, even without goals, this was a decent contest.  It was, with plenty of chances created by two teams eager to return to winning ways.

Reds have managed just one victory in twelve outings, with nine draws obtained during that period, whilst Town’s winless run has seen them drop out of play-off contention for the time being.

Bland, who could have been renamed ‘Blank’ after his performance, was certainly the busier of the two keepers and a string of saves, ranging from routine to the spectacular, included one from his opposite number, Atkinson.

That came late in the day when Workington were awarded a free-kick on the half-way line and quick thinking from Atkinson sent a ‘fifty-yarder’ towards the Derwent End goal with Bland, momentarily, off his line.

But he dealt with the most audacious attempt of the game, clutching the ball from thin air, just like he had all afternoon.

His best saves thwarted an early Kitt Nelson effort and two attempts from Dav Symington as the latter failed to get on the score sheet for the first time in six outings.

The skipper’s best chance fell late in the game, after Conor Tinnion’s assist set up the opportunity, but Bland blocked that well struck shot, gathered a trademark Symington free-kick and denied him on at least three other occasions.

Atkinson thwarted Jacob Gratton in the first half, Nathan Thomas squandered three opportunities whilst Jerome Greaves, denied by the Reds ‘keeper on one occasion, saw another effort cleared off the line by Sam Smith.

Smith performed well in Workington’s latest back-four permutation but his wretched luck for this campaign continued when he picked up two yellow cards within ten minutes during the second half.  That left Workington with ten men for the final half hour but yet another re-jig of their defence, in which Ceiran Casson and Jordan Little were outstanding, got them over the line.

The game had ebbed and flowed for an hour but became scrappy in the later stages and that suited Workington more so than the North Yorkshire outfit.

Casson, is in a rich vein of form at the moment, and he and Tinnion got through a busy shift in the engine room as Reds, once again, competed with another higher-ranked opponent.

The performances of late have deserved a better-points return but those standards have to be maintained over the last third of the season if Workington are to attain a top ten finish.
