Recap

This is not the farewell send-off we envisaged for Danny Grainger and a number of players who will soon be saying their goodbyes as the soul-destroying end to a season, that promised so much, extended to a sixth successive defeat.

With the last drop of confidence gone, Workington stumbled through another painful ninety minutes and Marine enjoyed a care-free afternoon as they strolled into the play-offs.

The day had got off to an embarrassing start for the club with bars, offices and changing rooms plunged into darkness ninety minutes before kick-off following an electrical fault.  Reds still couldn’t see where they were going when they took to the field, apart from a brief spell before Marine went ahead.

A bright opening from the Crosby side suggested it was going to be another testing afternoon for the hosts but, to their credit, they found a foothold in the game and had starting moving the ball about well as the game became competitive, albeit briefly.

That changed after twenty-eight minutes when Workington were punished on the counter-attack.  Owen Robinson, who had earlier squandered a good chance after being thwarted by Jim Atkinson, broke clear again.  He drew two Reds’ defenders towards him before releasing the unmarked Bobby Grant who finished confidently.

And Workington weren’t quite the same after going behind and never seriously threatened Bobby Jones in the Marine goal.

Ten minutes after the restart, the points were clearly heading back down the M6 as Jordan Little’s challenge on Grant resulted in a penalty for the visitors.  Robinson converted from the spot and, all of a sudden, it became a damage limitation exercise.

A rare opportunity was created when Conor Tinnion flighted a ball towards Ceiran Casson but the latter headed Reds’ best chance wide.

Then frustration got the better of Tinnion as the Reds’ legend picked up two yellow cards in as many minutes.  He clattered into Freddie Sass initially and was rightly booked for that although the retaliation from the Marine number three, bordering on strangulation, was also punished by a yellow.

There wasn’t even a cooling-off period for Tinnion and his next misdemeanour, a rash challenge on Josh Wardle, had red card written all over it leaving the disjointed hosts to battle on for a further twenty minutes with ten men.

The Marine skipper, Wardle, completed the scoring when he drove the ball home through a crowded goalmouth nine minutes from time.

With a suspension and injuries leaving Workington with a thread-bare squad, the agony looks set to continue into the last week of the season.  With matches against Macclesfield and Guiseley to play, Reds are in danger of equalling their eight defeats on the bounce at the end of the ‘18-19 relegation season.

And it was after that long, losing sequence that Danny Grainger arrived at Borough Park for his first spell.  How ironic that he could be bowing out on the back of a similar run of defeats.
