Recap

Workington’s draw specialists are record breakers with their sixth successive ‘one-pointer’ now officially recognised as the club’s longest league sequence.

The 1953-54 team had put together a run of five consecutive draws but another battling performance against Big Macc was enough to create a little bit of club history.  Probably not the most coveted record but, under the current circumstances, a very important one in this never-ending turnover of personnel.

And all fourteen players who turned out against last season’s West Division champions contributed with good, solid performances all over the pitch.

Clean sheets have been rare this season with Reds’ shipping goals at an alarming rate.  That is no surprise considering the countless defensive permutations that have been fielded, and credit is due to Messrs Grainger and Mitchell for holding their nerve as the injuries, suspensions and departures continue to dictate their preparations.

Yet this game could have gone either way, with both goalkeepers called into action regularly throughout another compelling watch.

Workington probably lacked that extra bit of composure in front of goal otherwise they might have been celebrating a famous win.  Scott Allison, Dav Symington, Kitt Nelson and Dannen Francis will all be ruing very good opportunities which were squandered whilst Dylan Berry made three crucial saves when called upon.

Alex Bruce, like his opposite number, Danny Grainger, felt his side did enough to win but they couldn’t find a way past the excellent Jim Atkinson.  He denied Luke Duffy on three occasions, with one effort touched onto the post particularly important, and also saved well to thwart John Rooney and Kane Drummond.

Then, in the closing stages, Drummond side footed wide after Neil Kengni supplied a teasing low cross from the left.

Top scorer Symington, who had scored in all but one of the last seven matches, came closest to breaking the deadlock when a first half effort struck the post and Francis scuffed a great chance in front of an open goal and the ball rolled agonisingly wide.

Skipper Conor Tinnion and Finlay Wallbank limped out of the action and are likely to be sidelined until the New Year but the manager is hoping to secure yet another loan signing before Saturday’s game.

Five of Workington’s six consecutive draws have been against teams in play-off contention which underlines the character in the squad at the moment.
