Like a broken toy, Reds are not functioning properly at the moment and the winless run extended to seven matches as Park Avenue obtained what has become a customary win at Borough Park.

Their success record against Workington is uncanny and stretches back many years, regardless of the status of the two clubs at any given time.

This was their sixth successive win in west Cumbria and probably justified their decision to travel on Friday and stay in the town overnight.

Until recently, Reds were scoring goals for fun but three games without hitting the net and the lack of clean sheets at the other end is a cause for concern.

The ‘R’ word hasn’t been mentioned yet, simply because Reds appeared on course for a comfortable mid-table finish, but four or five wins are needed from somewhere to avoid a quick return to Step 4 football.

Once again, they dominated large parts of the game, with the possession stats and chances created stacked heavily in their favour, but they failed to do what Avenue did with some panache, and that was put the ball in the net.

Two sublime finishes secured three precious points for the Yorkshire outfit although, it has to be said, the defending from Reds, for both, was poor to say the least.

The opener came after just nine minutes and culminated in Jordan Preston planting the ball in the corner of the net after an incisive five-man move exposed Reds’ frailties.  A good team goal from an attacking perspective but one which rankled with Danny Grainger, I’m sure.

And that goal always looked a potential winner as Reds couldn’t find a way past Kieran Flavell who made a series of decent saves.

But the issue was put beyond doubt after eighty-three minutes when Edy Maieco, presented with all the space he needed on his favoured left side, curled a sweet shot past Jim Atkinson for a crucial second.

That was their third serious attempt on target, Harry Colville had one early effort saved by Atkinson, so an impressive 2/3 success ratio.

In comparison, Reds could not convert one of many opportunities carved out from some decent service from the flanks.

Scott Allison was inches away from getting a vital touch on two occasions, Conor Tinnion was twice thwarted by Flavell, Ceiran Casson, too, denied by the giant ‘keeper and Avenue stopper then made the save of the match when he kept out a superb strike from Dav Symington, diving acrobatically to his right yet pushing the ball away with his left hand.

There was also half a shout for a home penalty when Sam Hetherington appeared to touch the ball away from Lucas Odunston and finished up on the turf, but the referee awarded Workington a corner instead.

The contest had been a mundane affair for most of the ninety minutes and the referee had booked Tinnion for a foul and Flavell for time wasting.  Then tempers and actions became frayed.

Jacob Lara was shown a red card, allegedly for derogatory remarks he made and, in a separate incident, Avenue’s goalkeeper coach, Dean Baker, was invited to walk down the tunnel after he too had been sent off for booting the ball out of the ground, delaying a throw-in.

That sparked the usual scuffle between staff from both benches and Jamie Devitt collected a yellow card for his involvement.

It was much ado about nothing really – very similar to the game itself!
