Two more commit to the cause

Two of the players who have been on trial throughout pre-season have made their arrangement more permanent by signing for the club ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

Defender Charlie Birch and midfielder Bobby Carroll have joined the club after both created a favourable impression over the summer.

The pair have featured in the three matches played so far and have worked well in training.

Doncaster born Carroll progressed through the various age groups at Leeds United and then got an opportunity to link up with Everton where he made good progress over four seasons before injury intervened.

He had played in the Premier League U18 set-up and got the chance to play at Goodison in the FA Youth Cup.

Bobby experienced senior football for the first time last term with a spell at Chorley.

Charlie’s career path has developed a little nearer to home with the Carlisle born left back coming through the ranks at Brunton Park, eventually making his EFL debut for the Blues at Colchester United in 2019.

He then spent a productive loan spell with Kendal Town and was a member of the Mintcakes team which held Reds to a goalless draw at Parkside Road two years ago.

Following his release from United, Charlie gained further experience with Annan Athletic and Penrith.  He is the son of former Stoke City, Carlisle United, Gretna and Northwich Victoria defender, Mark.

Manager Danny Grainger said he was delighted to add the talented duo to the squad.

“They have been with us since we reported back in June, acquitted themselves well and settled into the group immediately.  They are two talented players with a hunger to succeed after earlier disappointments in their career.”

Grainger, who hopes to complete another couple of deals in the near future added, “The squad has to be competitive and Bobby and Charlie will certainly provide plenty of competition for places in the months ahead.”
