The story behind the picture – United legends pay a visit
It’s not often you get four former Manchester United players taking refreshments in the Shankly Lounge, of all places, but that’s exactly what happened on 12 June, 2011.
The quartet, Alex Stepney, Pat Crerand, Jimmy Greenhoff and David Sadler, were non-playing guests when the Rotary Club of Workington organised a charity game between a Workington Reds Old Boys XI and a Manchester United Legends team at Borough Park.
With a combined total of 1100 League appearances for United, the four gentlemen had a tale or two to tell and all were very approachable. Alex was the only one who had actually played at Borough Park, doing so during his Millwall days in the mid sixties before becoming a United player.
United’s ‘old boys’, including the likes of Russell Beardsmore, Arthur Albiston, Andy Ritchie, Clayton Blackmore, Mike Duxbury, Sammy McIlroy, Frank Stapleton and Peter Davenport took a first half lead in the match through Deiniol Graham but the real Reds hit back in the second half.
Marc Green equalised and Graham Goulding volleyed home a last minute winner.
There was a post match dinner hosted at Hunday Manor where both teams and the players in the photograph assembled with Match of the Day commentator, Steve Bower, acting as MC.
Several local charities benefited from the event.
