The story behind the picture – Team of the Round

Workington’s 3-0 FA Trophy win over Barrow at Holker Street back in 2009 was a memorable occasion and was subsequently recognised by the FA who felt the performance was worthy of their ‘Team of the Round’ accolade.

And the Westmorland FAs, Gary Aplin, who was on the FA Trophy Committee at the time, is pictured presenting the attractive memento to Reds’ boss, Darren Edmondson.

Barrow had played Middlesbrough in their previous game, a gallant FA Cup defeat at the Riverside Stadium, and it was probably a good time to play them in the 2nd Round of the Trophy.

Gareth Arnison opened the scoring from the penalty spot and also netted our third ten minutes before the end.  In between, Phil McLuckie’s well taken goal put Reds well and truly in control and they were dominant throughout the second half.

It was a good night financially too.  In addition to the £6,000 prize money, Reds were handed a cheque by the Barrow treasurer for £5,766.09 – our share of the 1,614 gate!
