The story behind the picture – Stuart Williamson’s goal v. Mossley

If ever a photograph managed to deliver a ‘feel good factor’ it was this one taken on 3 May, 1999.

It was taken seconds after Stuart Williamson had headed Reds into a second half lead in the North West Trains League title decider against Mossley at Borough Park.

We had won thirteen games in a row to set-up a ‘winner takes all’ encounter but a draw on the final day of the season would have handed Mossley the title.  It was a tense game with Reds creating very little in the opening hour so the relief was tangible when Stu grabbed the most important goal of his Workington career.

Grant Holt, pictured celebrating with the Workington born defender, scored the second goal shortly after and, although Mossley reduced the arrears to ensure a nail-biting final ten minutes, we stayed resilient to land a long overdue title.
