The story behind the picture – Reds Take on Reds Legends

The Rotary Club of Workington organised a charity game between a Workington Old Boys XI and a Liverpool Legends team with a crowd of 1,958 turning up at Borough Park for the match played on 26 July, 2009.

Phil Neal captained a Liverpool side which included Bruce Grobbelaar, Alan Kennedy, Gary Gillespie, Mike Marsh, Jimmy Case, Howard Gayle, David Fairclough, John Durnin and Jan Molby.

John Reach skippered Workington’s squad which saw the likes of Ian Milburn, Alan Gray, Tom Cowan, Will Varty, Darren Edmondson, Darren Wilson, Billy Gilmour, Martin Henderson, Kevin Rowntree, Marc Green, Steve Birks, Gary Messenger, Keith Glover, Stuart Williamson, Graham Anthony, Jimmy Irving and Kenny Wallace supporting the fixture.

The picture shows Phil Neal (in red) and John Reach (blue) prior to kick-off with former Football League referee, Jim Parker, and assistants Graham Young and Steve McMahon.

A Graham Anthony goal decided a closely fought encounter but the real winners were the spectators and several local charities who benefitted from the Rotary’s generosity.
