The story behind the picture – Ladies’ Gigg Lane gig
The country has been ‘locked down’ for over a month but Bury FC’s stadium has been ‘mothballed’ for nearly a year now following their sad demise at the beginning of last season.
Indeed, one of the last competitive games to be played at one of the world’s oldest professional football stadiums involved Reds Ladies.
Our North West Women’s Regional League fixture v. Bury Ladies was played at Gigg Lane on 5th May, 2019, twenty four hours after Bury played their last Football League game (1-1 v. Port Vale) there.
Although we lost the fixture 3-1, it was a great experience for the girls playing at such a venue followed, a few days later, with an appearance at Carlisle United’s Brunton Park.
Hayley Bracken had the satisfaction of scoring Reds’ goal that day, the first by a Workington player on the ground since Matthew Berkeley’s FA Cup strike in 2007.
