The story behind the picture – Jacks in the box

A wonderful photograph taken on the eve of the 1938-39 season, and depicting five Workington players who all answered to the name of Jack.

Pictured from the left are right winger JackForeman, left winger Jack Pears, defender Jack Green, goalkeeper Jack Pratt and fullback Jack Eslor.

Foreman played in forty three games that season scoring a dozen goals in the process whilst  Pears turned out in thirty two matches with one of his eleven goals scored in the FA Cup against Mansfield Town at Borough Park.

Green played in the early part of the campaign but dropped out through injury whilst Pratt was a regular for the first five months of the season.  Eslor was a regular in the team, playing in all but three games that term.
