The story behind the picture – Civic Reception
Not since the Ken Furphy promotion season had Reds achievements been recognised by the local council.
So it was a privilege to be granted a Civic Reception after winning the North West Trains League title back in 1999.
The Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Mrs J McKeown, invited all the players, officials, directors and their respective partners to Allerdale House in recognition of the championship success.
And following a welcome speech from Mrs McKeown, the Mayor of Workington, Councillor Joseph Robinson, said a few words before Reds chairman, Bill Wilson, thanked Allerdale on behalf of the club.
A well presented buffet and drinks made for a pleasant evening before the playing staff signed the visitors’ book and had their photographs taken with the two mayors.
The event took place on Sunday 16th May, 1999 – almost a fortnight after Reds had obtained a narrow 2-1 win over Mossley to clinch the title in a ‘winner-takes-all’ decider on the last day of the season.
