The story behind the picture – Brothers, captains and opponents

This unique photograph was taken prior to Workington’s FA Cup First Round tie against Birmingham Corporation Trams played at Lonsdale Park on 24 November, 1934.

When Reds skipper Percy Thornton (left) went to the middle to meet the referee and the opposition skipper, he shook hands with his brother, Harry. Both players were full backs.

The day belonged to Reds’ Percy because he opened the scoring, via the penalty spot, and Workington eventually won 2-0, Billy Charlton scoring the second.

A crowd of 5,534 attended producing gate receipts of £247 (and a few shillings)!
