The story behind the picture – Bridge Construction

Following the tragic floods of 2009 which resulted in not only the loss of the Northside bridge but also the life of local policeman, Bill Barker, a major construction programme began on Borough Park’s doorstep.

Building the new bridge began in August 2011, nearly two years after the original structure collapsed into the River Derwent.

Borough Park became a base for the giant cranes and plant that were needed to help construct the eye-catching span which linked both sides of the river.

It was fascinating to see the equipment at close hand and watch the gradual completion of what became an award winning bridge.

The structure was officially opened in 2013 and Borough Park eventually returned to normal.

And one of the best views of Borough Park is travelling north to south across the bridge with the ground on your left.
