The story behind the picture – An opportunity for semi-pros
This picture was taken on 14 May, 1977 – the day of our final Football League game at Borough Park.
All six players were signed on non-contract terms and played against Newport County, along with five full time professionals who weren’t on the injury list at the time.
Goalkeeper John Laisby actually made his debut in the match and the others only had a handful of appearances to their credit.
The photograph shows:
Back row (left to right) Martin Scholes, John Laisby and David Marshall
Front row (left to right) Colin Williamson, Kenny Wallace and Neil McDonald
Martin made three appearances plus one as a substitute, John’s first two appearances (both v. Newport County) were our final games in the Football League, David played in two games, Colin was used more than the others making eleven starts and four appearances as a substitute, scoring twice in the process, whilst Kenny and Neil made five appearances and one as a substitute.
