Steve steps down from the board

Lifelong Reds supporter, Steve Durham has announced that he is to retire from his position on the board. But insisted, “My support for the club will not waver and I’ll continue to contribute to the cause in any way possible.”

“I have had two separate spells on the Board, serving for twelve years in total, and it has been an honour to represent the club in that time. However, I feel now is the right time to step aside and leave the Club in good hands – a vibrant new Board with plenty of fresh impetus and business acumen that, in my opinion, will benefit Workington AFC in the months and years ahead”.

Club Secretary Alec Graham paid tribute to Steve “His record of service to the Reds is truly remarkable and I doubt anyone can match his long list of achievements. He attended his first match in October 1963, a home game against Torquay United”. Workington were then a full-time professional side playing in the Division 4 of the Football League (the equivalent today of the EFL League Two).

Chairman Les Byers added “In my opinion he is ‘Mr Workington Reds’, his service to the club is absolutely second to none. Together we have overseen the transition of the new Board into place and I am deeply indebted to him for sharing his valuable knowledge and experience”.

“He had hinted that he would step down at the end of the season. But we are all delighted that he will continue to help when required. Steve will also continue his programme and website duties.

Les Byers has announced that, “In recognition of his amazing service, the board will establish the Steve Durham Clubman of the Year Award. We will invite Steve to present this annually to a member of the Club that has shown outstanding commitment and contributions to the Reds through the season”

“Finally, let’s not forget that he actually pulled on that red shirt during the nineties and also proudly played for the club.”
