Setanta Shield tie on radio
BBC Radio Cumbria Sport will feature Reds’ Setanta Shield clash v. Barrow in their Retro Match series on Saturday afternoon.
The match was played at Borough Park in November, 2007 just three days after our FA Cup First Round appearance at Bury.
Barrow had sacked Phil Wilson on the eve of the game leaving Darren Sheridan and Dave Bayliss in charge of a side which included no fewer than four players with tenuous links to Workington. Similarly, Darren Edmondson’s squad featured four players, included himself, that had played for Barrow.
It was the only Setanta Shield match played at Borough Park during our stay in the Conference with the sponsored league cup competition shelved the following season.
Nevertheless, it was a cracking game with Reds dominating the first half and Barrow on top in the second.
There was a former Holker Street favourite scoring for Reds and two strikers who would eventually sign for Workington finding the target for the Bluebirds.
The two teams couldn’t be separated after extra time and a dramatic penalty shoot-out eventually determined the winner.
This will be the third Reds game featured in the series following the thrilling victories at AFC Wimbledon (FA Trophy) and Blyth Spartans (Play-offs).
- The Sports Show is on air from 2pm.
