Reds start with double-header

Now into their third week of pre-season, Reds will get into match mode with games against Whitehaven and Penrith this weekend.

They will travel to the County Ground for the annual Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy fixture on Friday (7.30pm) before playing David Hewson’s side at Frenchfield the next day (1.30pm).

Steven Rudd will select different squads for the games with all players guaranteed plenty of field time over the two matches.  Those on duty at Whitehaven will be predominantly the younger players, supplemented by half a dozen seniors and trialists, whilst the full squad will be deployed at Penrith.

It will be the eleventh occasion Whitehaven have hosted us for the charity match, in memory of Shaun Hocking, in what has become a popular curtain raiser to the pre-season programme.

Whitehaven won the inaugural meeting (1-0) back in 2012 but Reds have scored freely in the nine subsequent matches winning the trophy eight times with it shared (following a 2-2 draw) three seasons ago.

Kick-off for Saturday’s run out at Penrith is now earlier than originally scheduled to enable everyone to get home in time for England’s latest instalment of Euros drama. Please support our local rivals in this weekend’s fixtures but respect the Covid measures put in place by the clubs.
