Reds on Christmas Day

The Reds first team squad will spend Christmas Day with their families and will be trusted by management not to over indulge in the celebrations across the long weekend.

They trained well in their final session ahead of Monday’s game at Kendal Town and are keen to go in the first NPL Cumbrian derby of the season.

But Workington teams in the past have played matches on Christmas Day, once an important date on the football calendar, and there were occasions when they actually trained on the 25th!

The original Workington AFC didn’t have the best of records on the big day and a 6-0 defeat at Everton Reserves was one of several reversals suffered during the Lancashire League and Lancashire Combination days during the early 1900s.

Even when the club was re-formed in 1921, regular Christmas Day fixtures, more often than not, resulted in defeat. The demands we put on our heroes these days is often a topic for debate so we trust they enjoy another free Saturday this weekend.
