Peter Hampton (1954 – 2020)

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of former manager Peter Hampton who died whilst on holiday.  He was 66.

Peter spent three and half years in the Borough Park hot seat and famously guided the club to our only title since the club re-formed in 1921.

He was appointed manager following our relegation to the North West Counties League in May, 1998 and served Reds until late October, 2001.  And in his first season, Peter assembled a squad that sensationally clinched the title on the final day of the 1998-99 season.

He was voted the league’s manager of the year in his first season and remains the only Workington boss with a championship asterisk on his CV.  During his spell at the club, Reds also won the Cumberland Cup and enjoyed excellent runs to the later stages of the FA Vase and Trophy competitions

Peter was in charge for 179 competitive games, winning 74 of those and losing 60.  The final game of his tenure was at Farsley Celtic, a touch ironic considering the number of years he spent in nearby Leeds during his playing days.

Born in Oldham, Peter’s illustrious career began with Leeds United and progressed with Stoke City, Burnley, Rochdale and Carlisle United where he ended his playing days.  He later became involved in several roles behind the scenes at Brunton Park spending eleven years there, many as physiotherapist.

• It is the second bereavement to affect the club in the past week, following on from the equally sad news that former Reds Ladies captain, Andrea Buggy, passed away at the tender age of 39.  Tributes to both will appear in Tuesday’s match day programme and they will be remembered prior to kick-off.
