On this day – 26 March

A look through the archives to see what was happening to Workington on this day in previous years……..

Sixty years ago, Reds were in Fourth Division action at Borough Park hosting Chester and seeking revenge for a 1-0 defeat at Sealand Road earlier in the season.

The outcome was a pleasing one for the bulk of the 2,344 attendance with Joe Harvey’s team emerging 5-0 winners.  Sharing the goals for jubilant Reds were Frank Kirkup, Ron McGarry, Des Jones, Bob Morrison (pictured) and Peter Harburn.

Reds would eventually finish 16th in the division with Chester, two points behind, in 20th position.

In more recent times, we conceded late goals to lose home matches in the Conference.  Back in 2011, Corby Town won 2-1 here, Andy Murray-Jones the Reds scorer, and in 2013, despite two Gareth Arnison equalisers, we lost to Bishop’s Stortford, 2-3.  The gate for the latter, a record low for us in the Conference of just 181. The games against Corby (248) and Bishop’s Stortford (299), a reminder of the distances we were travelling at the time.
