ON THIS DAY: December 11 – Capital cup tie
Workington supporters travelled to London in numbers on December 11, 1954 attending our first FA Cup tie in the capital…
Our reward for a 5-1 First Round win against Hyde United was an away trip to Leyton Orient. They had also knocked out non-league opposition in the previous round, recording a 3-0 success at Frome Town.
Orient were the Third Division (South) leaders at the time, Reds were having a better season in Third Division (North) but, as they were unbeaten at Brisbane Road, we started as underdogs.
The bit of luck needed to win such matches came mid-way through the first half when the home side missed a penalty.
We grew in confidence after that and scored the only goal on the hour – Jackie Bertolini grabbing the glory with a powerful low strike.
The attendance that day was a very impressive 15,498.
• Some forty two years later, 1996 in fact, Workington were playing a Unibond League First Division Cup match at Atherton Laburnum Rovers.
It was very low key in comparison to the match in London with Reds losing 1-0 in front of just 39 spectators!
