A look back through the archives to see what was happening to Reds on the 9th May……….
The 1965-66 campaign proved to be a very special one for Reds and we were in good form (one defeat in the last nine games) as we came to the end of our second season in the Third Division.
Ken Oliver, who sadly passed away pre COVID-19, was enjoying a good personal stint with the club and was an ever-present that term. He also finished top scorer and his thirteenth league goal helped us overcome Reading on this day in 1966.
It was an important win as Workington and Reading were similarly placed in the league. Reds eventually attained our highest ever Football League finish (5th) with the Elm Park club (8th) just one point behind.
Oliver (pictured) was born in County Durham and began his career with Sunderland although the first of his 250 League games was with Barnsley. He then moved to Watford before linking up with Reds in 1965. A spell with Bournemouth followed a three season stay at Borough Park. He scored 23 goals in 94 appearances for Reds before serving many clubs in a coaching capacity, one of which was Newcastle United.
