ON THIS DAY: 9 February – Five against Tamworth & three against Wrexham
A game that didn’t count, an abundance of 1-0 score-lines and a good day for Jonny Wright – all that and more for Workington on the 9th February in previous years…….
2019 North Ferriby United (away) 2-0 A first visit to Grange Lane in six years produced Reds’ best win there against a poor Ferriby side. Garry Thompson netted his first goal for the club just before half time, so becoming one of the oldest players (38) to score for Workington in the Northern Premier League. He was joined on the score soon after the restart sheet by the much younger Jason Walker (34) whose goal secured the points.
Sadly, North Ferriby United’s demise saw the Humberside club fold the following month so the result, plus the goals from Garry and Jason, were expunged from the record books – not so the yellow cards picked up by Dan Wordsworth and Brad Carroll.
As a consequence, Reds finished the season at the foot of the table and were relegated.
2013 Oxford City (home) 1-2 We welcomed Oxford City to West Cumbria for the first time and they travelled north on Friday and stayed overnight in the Whitehaven area. They proved too strong for Reds and had established a two goal lead before Jonny Wright replied with a late consolation goal.
For some reason, Jonny enjoyed playing on this day and that was the third time he had scored on the 9th February!
2010 Stalybridge Celtic (home) 1-0 A Jonny Wright goal after 37 seconds secured a Blue Square North victory for Reds on a bitterly cold Tuesday evening at Borough Park. Stephen Hindmarch, making his full debut, was unlucky not to grab the goal – his thumping shot had been saved and rebounded conveniently to Wright.
Having scored at one end, we only had to keep a clean sheet at the other to secure the points. And Tony Caig kept his goal intact thanks to a fine penalty save in the second half, thwarting Joe O’Neill.
2008 Tamworth (home) 5-0 Without a win in seven and a goal in three matches, Reds returned to form in style scoring five first half goals inside twenty seven minutes. Jonny Wright headed home the first in the fifth minute with Tony Hopper doubling the lead with the goal of the match three minutes later. Matthew Berkeley and David Hewson stretched the lead to four before Berkeley grabbed his second as Reds netted five with less than half an hour on the clock!
It was the first and only time we had netted five in the first half of a Conference North fixture and, needless to say, it was a best ever win against Tamworth.
2002 Eastwood Town (home) 0-1 A cracking game played in tricky underfoot conditions saw Town ‘nick’ the points five minutes from time. Their goalkeeper, Danny Bryant, kept us at bay almost single handed producing a string of fine saves before Rocky White pounced with the late winner.
1985 Goole Town (away) 0-1 Reds made the first of two successive Saturday visits to Goole Town – the first for a League Cup tie, which we lost to a first half goal, before returning the following week for a league fixture.
It was a far better day for Carlisle United that day – their 3-1 away win over Manchester City was featured on Match of the Day with future Red, Malcolm Poskett, scoring two of their goals.
1970 York City (away) 0-1 This was a popular score line for Reds during the 1969-70 season with ten of our matches decided by the one goal. Unfortunately, this was one of the six that we lost.
1957 Wrexham (home) 3-0 Reds were enjoying their best season since joining the League and were on a mission when facing North Wales opposition. They had lost by three goals at The Racecourse ground earlier in the season so to win by the same score in the return was suitable revenge. Billy Robson (2) and Jimmy Dailey, our main supply of goals, were both on target again.
1952 Tranmere Rovers (home) 1-2 Tranmere were one of several clubs who inflicted a league double upon us during our inaugural Third Division (North) campaign. Local lad, Micky Hardy, scored our consolation goal from the penalty spot – his only one for the first team!
