A look back through the archives to see what was happening to our team on the 6 April in previous years………..
It was Grand National day back in 2002 and Reds won at a canter when Ossett Albion visited Borough Park. The 4-0 victory was the best achieved on this day with John Wharton, Barry Irving, Rob Ennis (pictured) and Craig Johnston sharing the goals.
In contrast, we have suffered a couple of heavy defeats conceding six goals on the 6th in both the North Eastern League and Football League. We went down 6-2 against Newcastle United Reserves in 1928 and then crashed at Bradford Park Avenue 6-1 in 1953.
Our best afternoon whilst on Football League duty was at Stockport County in 1957 where Jimmy Dailey’s 23rd league goal secured a lone goal win, and a league double. A crowd of 12,000 plus turned out at Edgeley Park.
Not quite the same levels of support, just over 2,000, at Borough Park in 1968 when Reds hosted champions Luton Town. Allan Brown’s side were 1-0 winners on that occasion, completing a double at our expense.
Another promotion winning team, Gillingham, visited Workington in 1974 but the team who would finish second bottom (Reds) gave a good account against the team who would finish runners-up (Gillingham). The teams served up a 3-3 draw with Dave Murray (inset) scoring twice and Johnny Martin also finding the target for us.
The weather was the only winner at Borough Park on this day in 1991 after a home game v. Congleton Town was abandoned at half time. The visitors were 2-0 ahead when the referee called a premature halt, much to the anger of the Town committee and management.
Reds recovered from being a goal down, and missing a penalty (Martin Henderson), in our 1996 fixture at Whitley Bay to eventually win 2-1. Ian Milburn converted a second spot kick to equalise before David Taylor headed a close range winner.
Gareth Arnison’s superb strike decided a mediocre Conference North encounter against Worcester City in 2013 – it was his 99th goal for the club.
The home match v. Blyth Spartans on Easter Monday, 2015, saw kick off delayed by forty five minutes due to an accident on the A66 then, two minutes after the start, Blyth opened the scoring. We eventually salvaged a point thanks to a Conor Tinnion goal.
We needed a penalty shoot-out to overcome Pirelli in a Cumberland Cup tie here three years ago. Jordan Ferguson had scored for us in the 1-1 draw before Anthony Wright, Matty Douglas, Robbie Hebson and Nathan Waterston converted their spot-kicks to see us through, 4-2.
A cracking day at Witton Albion twelve months ago but the Reds performance didn’t match the superb weather. We went down to a disappointing 2-0 defeat, conceding a goal in each half of a poor, overall performance.
But a 2-0 score-line did finish in our favour way back in 1922! Thomas Henderson scored both goals in successful friendly against Blackburn Rovers.
