Not a goal in sight as Reds failed to win any pre-season matches on the 30th July in previous years………
2016
There were plenty of talented strikers on view in our game at Lancaster City (pictured above) but neither side managed a goal in a 0-0 draw.
Scott Allison came closest to grabbing a winner but he had a first half penalty saved by City ‘keeper, Mike Hale.
Ex. City man, Tom Kilifin, was playing for Reds that day whilst former Workington striker, Jordan Connerton, was back in Lancaster blue and white!
2007
Lancaster’s near neighbours, Morecambe, visited Borough Park thirteen years ago and a goal in each half secured a comfortable 2-0 victory for the visitors.
A young Phil McLuckie was in the Morecambe team alongside three other players – Andy Langford, Paul Lloyd and David McNiven – who would also turn out for Workington in later years.
Reds squandered several decent scoring opportunities but efficient Morecambe netted two good goals, the second a sublime forty yard chip from Keiron Walmsley.
2002
We fell to an Andy Hill header at Holker Street as the only goal of the match saw Barrow lift the Chas Kendall Trophy.
Richard Prokas made his Workington debut that day, having played against us a few days earlier for Carlisle United.
And turning out for Barrow was a future Reds skipper, Tony Hopper.
1991
Les O’Neill’s ‘eve of the season’ resignation left the club in state of flux but we fulfilled a friendly at Marchon and probably wished we hadn’t.
The outcome was a painful 2-0 defeat!
1987
A game against Carlisle United was played behind ‘closed doors’ at Borough Park with our Football League neighbours scoring twice in the second half to register a straightforward 2-0 victory.
Peter Harbach scored one of United’s goals and he, and fellow Blues, Brent Hetherington and Malcolm Poskett would spend time with us in subsequent seasons.
