On this day – 28 November

A look through the diaries to see what was happening to Reds on the 28th November in years gone by…………

There was a series of firsts in 1998, Workington’s first ever game in the FA Vase paired us with a first ever meeting against North Ferriby United and the match was decided by Alan Gray’s first goal for the club.

Early in the second half, Gray (pictured) smashed home the winning goal from fully thirty yards to secure Reds’ 1-0 victory and hand out Ferriby’s first defeat in twenty outings.

Single goal matches have been plentiful on this day.

Back in 1970, a Les Massie goal helped us to a 1-0 Fourth Division home win over Exeter City whilst, in 1981, skipper John Reach scored the only goal of an FA Trophy victory against Gateshead.

More recently, in 2009, another home game was decided by just the one goal with a Gareth Arnison penalty securing a Blue Square North win against Eastwood Town.

The Eastwood match was the first after the floods when PC Barker lost his life as the bridge crumbled into the River Derwent.

There was another 1-0 score line at Borough Park but not one we like to be reminded of.  A 1984 FA Trophy replay against Radcliffe Borough saw the visitors grab a first half winner to progress in the competition at our expense.

Our heaviest defeat on the 28th was back in 1964 when we went down to a 4-0 reverse at Bristol Rovers but, coming just three days after the epic 2-2 draw against Chelsea, there was no anger from the Reds’ faithful.

Danny Grainger

Five years ago, Danny Grainger (inset) was helping Carlisle United to a 3-1 home win over Crawley Town whilst, concurrently, Reds were getting the better of Ilkeston.

It was FA Trophy day three years ago and Reds inflicted a 5-1 defeat upon Glossop North End in a Tuesday night replay.  On target in the comfortable win were Matty Douglas, Sam Joel, Dav Symington (2) and Scott Allison….from the spot!

Scott Allison missed a penalty in the first minute and we twice had to come from behind before recording a thrilling 3-2 victory.  Joe McGee and a Gareth Arnison double, including a last minute winner, secured the points in the NPL fixture.
