A flick through the diaries to see how Reds pre-season matches finished on the 28th July in recent years………………….
2018
Poor defending proved costly on a showery afternoon at Frenchfield as we lost to Penrith in a game we dominated for long periods.
The corner count was 9-3 in our favour but, in terms of goals, the hosts came out on top 3-2 with former Red, Adam Main, scoring the decisive third.
Lewis Tidy scored his first goal for Reds and Sam Joel found the target late in the game but the Penrith supporters were the happier group at 5pm.
2015
Penrith were also our opponents five years ago, at Borough Park on this occasion.
It was typical of the fixture over the years and resembled an ‘old boys’ reunion – six members of the Reds squad had Penrith links whilst no fewer than ten of the visiting squad had previous Workington connections.
The outcome was a goalless draw although Martyn Coleman, a Penrith player that day, came closest to grabbing a winner with his last minute shot thumping the post.
2009
Controversy preceded Reds’ Chas Kendall match v Barrow when the latter turned up with their reserves for what was meant to be a first team fixture. Planning for the game included, programmes, catering, referees, stewards and using our out-of-county players, all of which would have not normally been considered for a second team encounter.
The match itself was a non-event with Reds strolling to a 3-0 victory against Barrow’s gallant youngsters.
For the record, Dan Shannon netted twice with Dan Robinson getting the other.
2007
There was another goalless draw when we visited Dunston but it was a decent game over the ninety minutes with both teams having their moments.
Adam Collin, just back from a trial spell with Hereford United shared the goalkeeping duties with Craig Summersgill.
2000
We have enjoyed some great nights at Borough Park when Newcastle United (pictured) have been in town and that was certainly the case twenty years ago.
A near 1,500 crowd turned out to see a Magpies side which included some well known names – the Caldwell bothers, Beharral, Ketsbaia, Charvet, Coppinger, £5.8 million signing, Marcelino, and two Cumbrians and future Reds, Mark Boyd and Stuart Green.
And when the hosts established a 2-0 interval lead, thanks to goals from Graham Goulding and Barry Irving, a ‘giant-killing’ was on the cards.
But Whitehaven born Green reduced the arrears with a cracking goal early in the second half and Newcastle recovered to win 3-2 although the decider was a fortunate own-goal from Reds’ youngster, Gary Hodgson.
1998
Our opponents two years earlier, Gretna, also played in a popular black and white strip but it was hoops not stripes for the Raydale Park encounter.
Reds began well over the border but faded just as quickly and eventually lost 2-0.
Paul O’Hagan and former Workington player, Mark Dobie, scored the goals.
