A look through the diaries to see what was happening to Reds on the 27th May back in the sixties………
Reds were twice in action on this day – their latest ever finish to a season whilst members of the Football League.
Back in 1966 Reds attained their highest ever placing – 5th in the Third Division – ending the ’65-66 campaignwith a 2-0 victory over Mansfield Town, a win that completed a league double over the Stags.
Ken Bowron, pictured above, scored his first Borough Park goal in that match but his time at the club wasn’t the success we had all hoped for. A prolific scorer during his time at Berwick Rangers, for whom he once bagged fifty goals in a season, but, despite scoring on his Workington debut in December, the goal trail dried-up on the opposite side of the country.
He did score freely for Reds Reserves but perhaps the Third Division was a step too far.
That proved to be his final goal for the first team in the Mansfield match and Billy Griffin joined him on the score-sheet as the team registered a nineteenth league victory.
Twelve months later, we completed the season in London losing by the odd goal in three at Orient. The decline in a year was remarkable as the loss on our only visit to Brisbane Road ensured we finished with the wooden spoon (24th) and were relegated to the Fourth Division.
Brian Tinnion (inset) had opened the scoring for Reds but second half goals for the Londoners, Allen and Went, completed a home win.
Playing for the opposition that day was Brian Wood who would become a popular servant to Reds during the seventies.
Employing three managers during the season, George Ainsley, Bill Leivers and Bobby Brown, obviously didn’t help our cause.
