On this day – 25 July
A look through the archives to reflect on pre-season matches played on the 25th July in recent years……….
2017
Matt Henney and Alan Inglis were in charge of the Gretna 2008 team which visited Borough Park and their squad included as many west Cumbrians as the Reds team.
Kevin Connelly always seemed to find the target against Reds and he opened the scoring in this game.
But two Sam Joel goals put us 2-1 ahead at the break and a third from Dav Symington in the second half secured a 3-1 win.
2015
There were also plenty of familiar faces in a home clash against Barrow (pictured) five years ago with Reds fans adapting to seeing Darren Edmondson, Aaran Taylor, Jason Walker, Alex and Elliott Newby, Joel Dixon, Andy Cook, Niall Cowperthwaite and Dav Symington representing the Barrow camp.
Perhaps there was too much familiarity as the match finished in a tame, goalless draw.
Reds created the better of the all-too-rare chances with the best falling to Jake Simpson who was denied by a smart Aaran Taylor save.
The Newby twins turned out for Barrow and we fielded the Smiths, Jake and Sam!
2009
Gateshead proved too strong for us and emerged worthy 2-1 winners in this Borough Park meeting.
Matt Henney did score an equaliser at one point, either side of goals from Graeme Armstrong and Wayne Phillips.
2006
The highlight of our 5-1 away win at Whitehaven was a second half hat-trick from Gareth Arnison. He completed his threesome via the penalty spot.
Craig Johnston had converted a penalty in the first period after Matt Henney had headed home Reds’ opener.
Carl McGrady replied for the hosts.
