On this day – 22 July
Reflecting on pre-season matches involving the Reds on the 22nd July in previous years……..
2014
Matt Henney’s Penrith side, including teenager Jordan Little, visited Borough Park six years ago and a good disciplined performance earned them a 1-0 victory.
Ryan Hall scored the only goal of the match on the hour mark after good work down the left from Lamin Cham.
Reds squandered numerous scoring opportunities including one from Stephen Hindmarch (pictured) who captained the team for the first time that night.
2009
A comfortable 4-0 victory was the outcome of the Copeland/Allerdale derby with Reds giving game time to seventeen players in the match at Whitehaven.
Callum Ruttledge scored a goal in each half and was joined on the score sheet by Andy Langford, netting his first for the club, and Dan Shannon.
Whitehaven, managed by former Red, Martin Harris, were denied a consolation goal when Tony Caig pulled off the save of the match to thwart Stuart Shaw.
2006
As pre-season matches go, the 5-0 defeat at Newcastle Benfield BP was a disaster and Tommy Cassidy admitted afterwards he was ‘ashamed and embarrassed’ by such an abject display.
The only consolation was that very few Workington officials or supporters were there to witness such a poor showing from a squad including all our established first-teamers.
Former player Paddy Atkinson was in charge of Benfield.
2003
Reds actually played a friendly in preparation for the friendlies with a low-key match against Harrington.
They won 5-0 with Craig Johnston (3) and Ian Grainger (2) enjoying the shooting practice.
2002
Keith Hunton struggled to raise a team for the first friendly of the summer at Annan Athletic so no surprise in the outcome, a 2-0 defeat.
But it presented an opportunity to Mark Carter, Stuart Williamson, Jon Hyde and Adrian Gate who were all given a first team debut.
The Galabank side, then a South of Scotland League outfit, secured the win with two first half goals.
