On this day – 19 July

Two familiar opponents have faced us on the 19th July in recent years but we welcomed first time visitors to Borough Park twenty two years ago……..

2016

Our friendly at Penrith finished all square four years ago with Andy Murray-Jones grabbing a last-minute equaliser for the hosts.

Phil McLuckie had headed Reds into a half time lead, but the second goal proved elusive as efforts from Josh Calvert and Scott Allison rebounded off the crossbar.

Penrith also saw one effort hit the woodwork and they deserved the draw albeit late in the game.

The game was played on a very warm summer’s evening.

2008

We were invited to play in the four team Annan tournament and met the hosts, Annan Athletic, in a noon kick-off.

The outcome was a 2-2 draw after ninety minutes, but Annan won (4-3) on penalties to reach the final.

Anthony Wright’s diving header levelled matters after Annan had taken an early lead and a Michael Reed spot-kick put us in front early in the second half, only for the Galabank (pictured above) side to restore parity.

Wright and Reed also converted their penalties, as did Graham Anthony, but Dan Kirkup, David Hewson and Tony Hopper had their spot-kicks saved by former Red, Craig Summersgill.

1998

Scottish club Queen’s Park had stayed in the Washington Central hotel overnight as part of a mini tour to Cumbria.  They had won 2-1 at Penrith on the Saturday before losing 2-0 on their first to Borough Park twenty-four hours later.

Liam Bell’s sublime chip had given us an interval lead with Lee Collins doubling the advantage soon after the restart.

The two skippers, Martin Kirkby and David Graham, exchanged pennants before kick-off to mark the first ever meeting between the clubs.
