ON THIS DAY: 19 December – Goals galore

Workington have scored freely on the 19 December in previous years including a five goal haul against York City, four versus Millwall and nine against Mirehouse……….

The 9-0 win v. Mirehouse was the most recent with Reds fielding a strong team for a Cumberland Cup tie in 2006.  Originally, Reds intended playing the reserves under the Mirehouse floodlights but Tommy Cassidy sent the first team due to their lack of action at the time.

Tony Nicholson

And it was a good night for birthday boy, Craig Johnston (featured), and Tony Nicholson, both of whom registered hat-tricks, Johnno opening the scoring after just ninety seconds.

Wayne Gordon chipped in with a couple and Dean Douglas also netted in front of a decent crowd at the Seathwaite Avenue ground.

The two big Football League wins on this day were back in the fifties with a 5-2 victory recorded against York City in 1953 and a 4-0 success over the Londoners in 1959.

Hull City proved too good for us in 1964 winning 3-1 at Borough Park despite Trevor Price’s first Football League goal.

There was also a hat-trick from a Reds player in 1998 with Jeff Henderson scoring three in a North West Counties success against Atherton Collieries. Brett Swift found the target in a 4-0 win – his first goal at that level.

Kyle May
Derek Townsley

And we experienced a mixed-up afternoon at Barwell five years ago with Kyle May scoring the only goal as Reds finished with ten men and no manager – Joe McGee and Derek Townsley both red carded by the referee!
