A look through the archives to see what was happening to Reds on the 17th November in years gone by……….
Worcester City’s St. George’s Lane stadium (pictured above) had always been a happy hunting ground for Reds and we extended our unbeaten run to six matches there when we were on Conference North duty eight years ago.
City were a goal to the good at half time but Reds dominated the second half and deserved to equalise through a well taken Gareth Arnison goal.
The 2012 visit to Worcester was our last, sadly, although we did play them the following season – at Kidderminster!
We were involved in a bizarre game back in 2001 at Spennymoor United – not sure if it was a nine goal thriller or a ‘disaster movie’. With new manager Tommy Cassidy (inset) taking charge of his first league game, the 5-4 defeat wasn’t the result he was hoping for and he left the ground shaking his head in disbelief.
The home side were 3-0 ahead but goals from Ryan McCluskey, on his league debut, Barry Irving, Darren Wilson and Graham Goulding saw Reds fight back to lead 4-3. But we conceded two late goals to lose by the odd goal in nine!
That was just one of several defeats as a non-league club which contrasted to an impressive list of results when we were in the Football League, five played with two wins and three draws recorded.
Luck was against at Hinckley United in 2007 with Graham Anthony sent off after just ten minutes, following a handling offence. Adam Collin then saved a penalty but we lost 2-1 with Matthew Berkeley netting our only goal.
There was no hard luck story two years ago in the home match against Grantham Town. We simply weren’t good enough and were thrashed 4-1 on home soil.
Pessimistic Workington supporters probably felt the writing was on the wall when Grantham arrived in West Cumbria having lost eight games in a row. But the poor form on the day belonged to Workington who were four down, Max Waters and Danny Durkin each scoring twice, before Scott Allison reduced the arrears via the penalty spot. The majority of the home support had left the ground when we scored, epitomising how bad we had been for much of the game.
