On this day – 14 November
A look through the record books to see what was happening to Reds on the 14th November in years gone by……..
Reds should have been playing Nantwich Town this afternoon – just like they were in 1998.
Twenty two years ago, Reds hosted the Dabbers in a North West Counties League fixture and, after four draws in their previous six outings, got back on track with a hard fought 3-2 victory.
The win completed Reds first league double of the season with goals from Stuart Williamson, Jeff Henderson and Lee Collins securing the points against a gallant Nantwich outfit.
An attendance of 658 was recorded but that was actually down on recent matches with the previous four home games averaging 845!
We were on our travels in 1992, 1981 and 1973, trips which produced a draw, a win and a defeat.
We obtained a point following a 1-1 draw at Alfreton Town in 1992 thanks to a Sean Sunderland goal, but had enjoyed success at nearby Matlock Town in 1981.
Two Barry Diamond goals helped us to a 2-1 win at Causeway Lane in what was a seventh consecutive victory for Reds.
But it wasn’t such a good day back in 1973 when we suffered a 4-0 drubbing at Gillingham – a team who would finish Fourth Division runners-up at the end of the season.
In more recent times, Reds suffered an FA Trophy defeat over the border at Gretna in 2000. Grant Holt, back on loan at Reds, had opened the scoring with a first half goal but the Raydale Park side scored twice in the last ten minutes to progress at our expense.
A controversial Gareth Arnison goal and a sublime chip from Jonny Wright helped us to a commendable 2-0 success at Corby Town in 2009, the match taking place at Town’s old ground which was adjacent to their current stadium.
There was a good pay day in 2015 when Salford City’s visit (pictured above) to Borough Park attracted a 1,405 crowd to the NPL fixture. The bumper attendance turned out on the back of a TV documentary on Salford City which had been televised in the weeks leading up to the game. High-profile Salford emerged 4-1 winners that day, with Joe McGee the Reds scorer, but our treasurer was sporting a big smile after banking £11K from the gate and all match-day activities.
