ON THIS DAY: 14 January – Dav hat-trick
A look through the archives to see what was happening to Reds on the 14th January in years gone by…….
Four years ago today we were treated to an entertaining afternoon at Borough Park with Dav Symington taking the leading role in our 4-1 Evo-Stik Premier Division success over Mickleover Sports.
After a mundane first half, the game burst into life during the opening fifteen minutes of the second during which Reds scored four goals, missed a penalty and rattled the crossbar.
At the interval we were trailing 1-0 after Tony Burgin’s twentieth minute opener but Workington, or rather Mr Symington, turned the game on its head soon after the restart.
Dav equalised from a harshly awarded penalty (48), then volleyed home a sublime goal to give us the lead (51), had a second penalty saved (52), Rob Wilson got in on the act to make it 3-1with another stunning strike (54) before Dav completed his first hat-trick in senior football after converting his third penalty (56). He also saw another effort almost snap the crossbar!
I don’t think there is anything to compare with Dav’s explosive cameo in 2017 but we have had our moments.
There was another Borough Park hat-trick on this day with Jimmy Dailey putting Oldham Athletic to the sword in 1956. His threesome was supplemented with one from Jackie Bertolini as Reds completed a Third Division (North) double over the Latics.
More celebration for Workington supporters following an impressive 4-0 win at Holker Street sixty years ago. It was our most emphatic away win over Barrow in fifteen Football League visits.
Sharing the goals that day in 1961 were Bobby Dixon (2), Frank Kirkup and Bill Bradbury.
There was a first for us in 1978 when we played in our inaugural FA Trophy tie. Altrincham were the visitors to Borough Park and they earned a replay on the back of a goalless draw.
Alty also visited us in 2012 for a National North fixture and pocketed the points after a 2-1 victory – despite David McNiven’s first Workington goal on home soil.
Two other NPL successes at Borough Park included a 1984 win over the wonderfully named Horwich Railway Mechanics Institute and an odd goal victory over Hyde United in 2006.
John Smith, Graham Gill and Martin Harris all added to their personal goal totals in a comfortable 3-1 victory over RMI.
David Hewson didn’t score many headers in his distinguished Workington career but he did just that against Hyde with a fine, far post finish securing a 1-0 win after a cracking match.
